  The 1970s

The lack of stable sources, which hitherto predominated in its resource structure, led the Bank to adopt a new strategy, geared towards harnessing of domestic and foreign capital and diversification of its credit activities. Expansion of the network of branches, modernization of facilities and consolidation of the planning system were other highlights of this period.

1971

Banco do Nordeste created, in a pioneering move in the Region, the Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FUNDECI), to support economic and agronomic research projects in the quest for technological alternatives for the Northeast, notably in the agricultural sector and the semi-arid. In this same year, the Regional System for Promotion of Exports was created and incentives for tourism in the Northeast gained their first advertising campaign promoted by the Bank.

1973

The Northeast Urban Development Fund (FUNDURBANO) was created, administered by Banco do Nordeste using funds from several sources, which enabled support for works improving urban infrastructure in the large centers of the Region, especially in the transport system.

1974

The Northeast Investment Fund – FINOR was implemented, a special chapter in the experience of Banco do Nordeste as a financial agent of federal funds for the Region. With a view to transforming the secondary sector into a cluster for stimulation of the region’s economy and attracting investment and business capacity to the Northeast, FINOR opened up opportunities in the stock market for Northeastern companies.

1975

In mid-1975, the Bank opened up a new front for activities, with the creation of the International Operations Department, which constituted the first step for participation of the bank in the foreign exchange market, expanding the possibilities for harnessing of foreign revenue.

1976

Loans commenced within the framework of the POLONORDESTE (Program for Development of Integrated Areas of the Northeast) and, in the following year, were made operational by the Special Support Program for Development of the Semi-Arid Region of the Northeast (Countryside Project) and the National Ethanol Program (PROALCOOL).
