Northern Espírito Santo Cluster
The Northern Espírito Santo Cluster has an area of 10,612.9 km² and a population of 383 thousand inhabitants, encompassing around 12.4% of the population of Espírito Santo. Population distribution in the Cluster reveals a reasonable concentration in the municipalities of Colatina and Nova Venécia, where 40% of inhabitants live. The municipality of Colatina is also the most representative in economic terms, within the whole area of the Cluster.
Being close to the industrial centers of the South of Brazil, the Cluster has enormous potential for expansion of agribusiness linked to the main corridor, such as processing / industrialization of coffee, exploitation of granite deposits through transformation in situ and export of processed slabs, exploitation of fruit farming, fish farming and sheep and goat farming. There is considerable potential to be made use of in the expansion of the clothing industry, which is becoming an economically significant activity in the urban areas of the Cluster.
The conillon variety of coffee is the main crop. Both relief and climate favor development of this crop, which is cultivated predominantly by farmers of European descent (German and Italian) and who are experts in the production process. The municipalities in the Cluster represent 38% of the State's coffee production.
Another important activity is granite production. Large deposits are exploited, making use of the considerable size of the Region's natural resources.
Infrastructure
Highways
Access to the Cluster is gained through a multimodal transport system, in addition to the existence of canals for transport of produce, and paved highways to the large consumer centers. The region is served by the BRs - 122, 135, 381 and 116 to Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and the port of Rio de Janeiro (southern route), BR 122 - BR 030 to Guanambi - BR 030 to Vitória da Conquista and BR 263/262 to the port of Ilhéus/BA (northern route). |
