The Northeast: one of Brazil's richest regions in terms of culture, natural beauty and history. The Northeast of Brazil encompasses an area of around 1.5 million square kilometers (18% of the Country), comprising nine states with 51 million inhabitants (estimated 2005), almost 28% of the population of Brazil.
Geographically, the Northeast region is located between the parallels of 01° 02' 30 and 18° 20' 07 south and between the meridians of 34° 47' 30 and 48° 45' 24 west of Greenwich. It is limited to the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; to the south by the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo; and to the west by the states of Pará, Tocantins and Goiás.
The Northeast is the closest Brazilian region to the European and North-American markets, which leads to considerable advantages for international trade.
