Brazil has the largest global reserve of gypsite (raw material for plaster), with 1.2 billion tons and has the competitive advantage of 98% purity. Using appropriate technology, it is possible to manufacture high quality plaster. Producer of 90% of the plaster consumed in Brazil, Pernambuco is the most productive Brazilian state in this sector.
Domestic market undergoing growth
Although showing per capita plaster consumption 15% lower than the European average, the prospects are good for growth of this sector in the domestic market. In recent years, per capita consumption increased from 3kg per inhabitant, in 1997, to 13kg at present.
