This work analyses the relationship between social capital and economic growth. First, the various meanings of this term are considered. Then, it shows that social capital can be seen as a resource. It has also been linked to increases in total factor productivity, accumulation of physical and human capital, innovation, and quality of public policies. Finally, the paper explores the reasons why growth accounting studies did not identify the role of social capital.
