The process of economic liberalization and commercial integration, associated with monetary valorization has resulted in the internalization of prices of agricultural commodities that previously enjoyed protection from imports: rice, edible beans and corn. As a result, there has been a significant drop in the internal prices of these products. The production of basic food stuffs in the North East during the period examined, nevertheless, was less affected by price internalization than in the country in general. This demonstration of resistance to crisis suggests that the Government would do well to implement policies that would stimulate regional food production, in hopes of increased production, higher levels of income, more jobs and a reduction in the importation for these products.
