The objective of this paper is to show that the technological and organizational innovations introduced in the automobile sector during the eighties altered the relationship between employment and production, producing a divergence in that series after 1987. An econometic model is formulated to capture the possible structural break in the relationship between such series. The usual tests for time series are applied to estimate the static and dynamic relationships. The results show that the elasticity employment-production is positive in the period 1957-1986, however becomes negative after 1987. Indeed, it is proven that there is a divergence relationship between employment and production after the maturation of the technological and organizational innovations.
