This paper aims to perform an empirical test of the validity of the purchasing power parity (PPP) hypothesis for the Brazilian economy. The long-run relationship between nominal exchange rate and the relative movement of prices was examined using cointegration analysis according to Engle and Granger methodology. The time period considered included the months of January 1980 to June 1994, considering the evidence of high inflacionary index at that period. The results confirmed the PPP hypothesis for the Brazilian economy, in accordance with the studies performed for others inflacionary economies.
