CONVERGENCE AND DIVERGENCE OF AGRICULTURAL AND RANCHING PRODUCTIVITY IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL: AN ANALYSIS CONSIDERING MATOPIBA

Given the idiosyncrasies of agricultural and ranching productivity in Brazilian regions, this study aims to analyze the Northeast Region of Brazil, which has undergone significant changes since the beginning of its economic development. The main motivation for the study is the fact that, although the Northeast has a number of problems that hinder agricultural development, it still has high-performance areas, such as Matopiba. With this in mind, the aim is to identify whether there is convergence in agricultural and ranching productivity between the northeastern micro-regions spanning from 1995 to 2017. To this end, Spatial Econometrics will be used and spatial regimes will be considered. The results suggest that even though the Northeast is considered by some of the literature to have low agricultural and ranching productivity, there are discrepancies between its own micro-regions. There is a process of convergence between the micro-regions located in the states that belong to Matopiba, while outside Matopiba, the Northeastern micro-regions do not show a process of convergence. The hypothesis of convergence cannot be confirmed for the Northeast as a whole. Among the variables that have an impact on the convergence process, the number of tractors per hectare and rainfall were positive and significant.
