This paper estimates and compares inequality measures for the Northeastern and Southeastern regions in Brazil using consumption expenditure and income information as a measure of household resources, using data from Pesquisa sobre Padrões de Vida 1996/7. The purpose is to evaluate how can these measures lead to different conclusions about the disparities in Brazilian household standard of living, and how can it differs between regions. The results indicates that for both regions the inequality in the distribution of expenditures is significantly lower than the income inequality. Furthermore, the interregional differences in the inequality indices and household standard of living are smaller when assessed in terms of expenditure.
