During the 70s and the 80s, the northeastern region of Brazil showed an economic performance that can be characterized as virtuous, considering it is a region located in the periphery of the country. But those results were not enough to diminish the poverty level of the region. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the determinants of growth in the Northeast between 1970 and 1996, using a data bank of social, demographic and economic variables for microrregions (groups of municipalities with similar geoeconomic features). This paper is divided into six sections. The first one is the introduction. The second is a brief summary of the population and employment dynamics in the region. The third and fourth sections put forward the theoretical approach and the econometric model used in this paper, respectively. The fifth shows the main results of the estimations. Finally, the last section contains the conclusion and some recommendations regarding public policies.
