This paper attempts to show income and employment movements in the Região Metropolitana de Salvador during the nineties. Different macroeconomic environments are considered in their impacts on income distribution, employment generation and changes in the labor relations. The loss of average earnings and the increase in less formal labor contracts are highlighted as the major characteristics of the period. In some situations income and self-employment moved in the same direction, meanwhile in others they behave in opposite movements. The deterioration of labor conditions and a more precarious labor relations goes beyond each type of conjuncture, signalizing deeper structural change in the labor market. Data from PME, PNAD e PED, and from national accounts in regional level were utilized in the paper.
