Discuss the need, possibility and adequacy of formulating and implementing a National Policy of Regional Development in Brazil, issue that has been absent in the National discussions during a time that is prevailing the liberal ideas. Examines the heritage of the Brazilian regional dynamics, emphasizes the new tendencies and speculates on a likely redefinition of Brazil’s regional dynamics in recent years. Deals with the country’s spatial fragmentation hypothesis in a scenario of competitive insertion, but over all views Brazil’s “pacific insertion” in globalized markets. Advocates that fragmentation may be countervailed by a new national policy of regional development similar to those in use by other countries and even economic blocks such as the European Union. Opposes to the current dominant approach to argue that a country like Brazil may take part on the new world environment without committing the faults from the past. This way, argues that the regional dynamic, if left only to market decision, will enhance its selective characteristic enlarging those faults. Proposes the formulation and implementation of a National Policy of Regional Development, considering the new approach to the Brazilian Regional issue.
