Abstract

In an agrarian economy, the soil is one of the major components of the productive capital. To keep a process of sustainable development, it is indispensable to protect and conserve this productive capital. So, the struggle to prevent erosion is a priority in the sustainable management of natural resources, particularly in semiarid regions. That struggle implies, among other measures, the following actions: searching for improvement in fertility of cultivated soils; reducing the surfaces of deteriorated lands; restoring and improving the quality of vegetal covering; improving the availability of water and the control of surface waters.
