This paper analyses the role of education in the process of economic growth, in the Northeastern region of Brazil in the period 1970-91, with an approach that emphasizes the spatial differences of the regional growth. The main hypothesis of this paper is that the regional economic growth was spatially assymetric, but that growth showed convergence due to the amazing developments in the educational basis of the population in that region. This paper brings a microrregional analysis never used to evaluate the role of education in the northeastern region of Brazil. This was possible thanks to the development of a methodology that measures the GDP of the cities in the Region.
