The paper aims to discuss a series of relevant issues towards the formulation of propositions for the conception of new polices of regional development for Brazil. The work is developed into four sections, including the introduction and the conclusions. The second section discusses the justifications for regional policies as an important component of national development policies and the need for the conception of new regional policies. In this section is it was also made a brief analysis of traditional policies on regional development until the 1980s, in selected countries, ending with a brief critical assessment of the results achieved by these policies. Section three makes na incursion on a series of international experiences, emphasizing the context in which the changes in the theoretical references were generated and which led to the conception of new regional policies. In this section several important concepts are discussed, such as: flexible firms and regions, new industrial spaces, flexible especialization, and inovative regions. The new role of the Government is still emphasized. The section ends making several policy propositions for Brazil. The last section presents the conclusions.
