This paper discusses the main characteristics of the sugar international market and the Brazilian participation in this market. Special emphasis is given to the dynamic transformations that have characterized sugar international market in the last few years. We conclude that caloric sugar (sacarose) will hardly present good opportunities in foreign trade in the long term. However, we can have short periods of "optimistic bubbles". This is so because of the competitiveness and complementary of sugar substitutes, and because the supply of sugar is large in the market. However, the non caloric sugar, still being developed, could cause a revolution in sugar trade, with the possibility of market recuperation.
