The objective of this study was to analyze the Ceará exporting sector performance in the international market, during the period from 1970 to1994. For this, the external overture degree, the evolution of the exports value, the importance of the commercial partners, the influence of the real exchange rate over the total value of the exports were investigated. Low degrees of external overture and concentration in a few products were found, with excel to cashew nut almond and lobster. The sectors which had the biggest participations in the exports total value were the fishery, cashew nut and textile industries. However, from the point of view of tendency, only the textile industry grew in the international market, while the two others lost importance in the twenty five years analyzed. Still, export income concentrated in a few commercial partners and strong dependence to the North American market were found. The export income of Ceará was inelastic in relation to variations in effective exchange rate and the partial coefficients of determination suggest that the Ceará exporting msector performance was more influenced by other variables.
