Abstract

The present work focuses regional problems and the current perspectives of the Northeast, since the formation process of the regional agency of development to the present. It registers and analyses, important heard "opinions" and important subjects forgotten along this process. The Northeast and the mesh of relationships that had exposed it to an economic growth inferior to the national one is depicted. Complementing what was exposed by the Grupo of Trabalho para o Desenvolvimento do Nordeste - GTDN, it is clear that the mechanism by which the market forces, given the development model adopted by the country, was taken the Area to become less and less attractive to the capital. It aims the essential elements of the deliberate strategy, initially adopted, and the introduced changes. It registers the relative gains of the Area, qualifying them. The industrialization, it stands out, is founded in subsidiary companies, a fact not very valued in the current economic analyses. The country field was modernized, but the potentials of the drought resistant plants were not explored, nor the ones of adequate cattle technologies with which the Area would have larger comparative advantages, with sustainable development.
