The objective of this study is to provide information on production, international trade, and outlook for the leather and footwear industries worldwide, in Brazil, and in the Northeast in 2025. Starting in December 2022, leather and footwear production recovered and grew, but around April 2024, Ceará experienced accelerated growth while Bahia plunged into recession. The high level of Brazil’s benchmark interest rate combined with the sharp increase in U.S. import tariffs in August 2025 had a negative impact on leather and footwear production performance. In September 2025, production declined in Bahia (-13.6%), the Northeast (-5.0%), and Brazil (-1.2%), but showed a positive rate in Ceará (3.7%). Analysts estimate that footwear production in Brazil should grow by 2.1% in 2025, reaching 902.7 million pairs.
