The use of corn as a feedstock for ethanol production in Brazil is expanding, particularly in the Central-West region, due to the abundant availability of grain. Investments in this sector are expected to continue growing in the coming years, with projections of increased activity in the Northeast as well. During the 2023/24 harvest, a sugarcane mill in Alagoas began producing grain-based ethanol, and in 2025, a biorefinery in Maranhão commenced operations to produce ethanol from corn and sorghum. Additional investments are anticipated in Bahia, driven by the availability of grain in the state’s cerrado areas. The Northeast also includes the Sealba region, an area of expanding corn production that hosts several sugarcane mills/distilleries, offering significant potential for the installation of flex biorefineries. The growth of corn ethanol production in the region is expected to generate substantial impacts on the regional biofuel market, the sugarcane ethanol sector, and livestock production.
